ORIGINALLY NAMED THE 'HILTON' HOUSE BUT DURING THIS WRITERS TIME WAS CHANGED TO "HARRIET HOUSE". THE HARRIET FAMILY, A RANCHING FAMILY,OBTAINED THIS AS THEIR DOMICILE PRIMARILY FOR THE SCHOOLING OF THEIR FAMILY, GRACE, MARIANNE, MICHAEL, ALICE.

LA CASA DE LA FLECHA (HOUSE OF THE ARROW)


LA CASA DE FLECHA (HOUSE OF THE ARROW) HAS A WEATHERVANE ON TOP OF THE TOWER PORTION OF THE BUILDING. BUILT IN 1885 BY ANTONIO Y A.ABEYTIA OF A STYLE UNUSUAL TO SOCORRO.
DEEDED AND DEDICATED TO HIS WIFE RUFINA VIGIL DE ABEYTIA. ABEYTIA MADE A LARGE FORTUNE IN THE MINING THEN GOING ON NEAR MAGDALENA IN THE 1880s. THE NORTHEAST CORNER IS THE LOCATION OF THE THREE STORY OBSERVATORY. ALL BRICK STRUCTURE WAS AGAIN UNUSUAL FOR THE TIME.

THESE APARTMENTS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER AND ALSO BEEN UNDER VERTURALLY UNDER SORT OF RENOVATION DURING THIS TIME. THE WALL AROUND THE COMPLEX WAS RAISED AT ONE TIME TO KEEP THE HIGHSCHOOL STUDENTS FROM SITTING ON THE WALL.
IT HAD SEVERAL COATS OF STUCCO OR MUD PUT ON IN THE STANDARD SOUTHWEST COLORS, EITHER TAN OR DARK BROWN.

THE TALL 2 STORY BUILDING ACROSS THE STREET AT THE SOUTH END IS THE LOCATION OF THE OLD PUBLIC LIBRARY. NOT SURE OF THE BUILDING IT SELF.

AS I REMEMBER BILL WAS THE ENGINEER IN CHARGE OF THE SOCORRO AREA OF THE U. S. COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY. A FUNCTION OF THE FEDERAL WATERWAYS. BILL WAS ALWAYS TAKING MEASUREMENTS ON THE RIO AS TO CURRENT SPEED AND DEPTH AND SILT CONTENT AND AMOUNT.

WALTER DARR WAS THE WATER MAN FOR MANY YEARS AND ACTIVE IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT .

THE HOME WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE.

BALDWIN HOME MRS. BALDWIN AND SON ROBERT BALDWIN LIVED HERE. MRS BALDWIN OWNED A CURIO STORE ON THE PLAZA WITH THE FINEST SELECTION OF NAVAJO BLANKETS. BOB WAS IN THE INSURANCE AND REAL ESTATE BUSINESS ALSO ON THE PLAZA. INTERESTINGLY NANCY BURKES, DAUGHTER OF MRS. BALDWIN, AND HER HUSBAND GARNETT BURKES BUILT THEIR HOME ACROSS THE STREET.

MOST OF THE HIS WORK NORTH AND WEST OF SOCORRO. HE HAD DIGS OF HIS OWN AND ALSO DID
CONSULTING FOR OTHER MINE OWNERS.

DOCTOR C. C. CLARK, A LOCAL DENTIST, AND FOR A LONG TIME THE ONLY ONE, A VERY STRONG
SUPPORTER OF COMMUNITY AFFAIRS, IT IS FOR HIM THE ATHLETIC FIELD IS NAMED. AS A YOUNG BOY I PASSED BY THIS STRUCTURE TWICE DAILY FOR YEARS. THERE WAS AT ONE TIME
A SET OF GRAVES JUST INSIDE THE DRIVEWAY TO THE LEFT(I THINK I REMEMBER THE LOCATION RIGHT, WIFE BELIEVES THAT THIS IS RIGHT. SEEN SUMMER OF 1978/9)

THIS WAS A FAVORITE GATHERING SPOT FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS 1945 / 1950. THE ZWICKY'S WERE VERY KIND IN ALLOWING AND ENCOURAGING THEIR DAUGHTER CECILIA ROWE
TO HAVE THE GANG HERE RATHER THE STREETS OR TROUBLE IT WAS A GREAT HOME

THE RUBY GRIFFITH HOME ON GRANT ST. RUBY GRIFFITH A LONG TIME RESIDENT OF SOCORRO
WAS AN AVID GARDNER, HER PASSION DETERRED BY WHAT SHE CALLED 'WEEK KNEES' YET SHE WAS KNOWN TO TAKE TO WALKING ON OCCASION THE FULL DISTANCE TO THE SCHOOL OF MINES.
I FORGOT TO MENTION RUBY CALL THEM HER 'WEEK' KNEES BECAUSE AFTER THE WALK TO SCHOOL IT WOULD TAKE A WEEK TO QUIT HURTING.

THIS IS THE RENOVATED HOME AFTER A FIRE,
THE PICKENS HOME. THE ELDER MR. PICKENS WAS A LONG TIME RESIDENT AND FOR SOME TIME THE ONLY PLUMBER IN TOWN. WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS THAT MR. PICKENS HAD LOST IS LEFT ARM IN AN ACCIDENT, THE OTHER FACT WAS THAT MR. PICKENS WAS THE FINEST OF PIANO TUNERS AND WAS A MAGNIFICENT PLAYER OF THE PIANO AND WOULD PLAY THE MUSIC WRITTEN FOR ONE HAND. WHEN HE CAME TO TUNE THE PIANO HE WOULD COME DRESSED IN A TUXEDO AND WEARING A TOP HAT. A FINE FINE GENTLEMAN FATHER OF THREE BOYS AND ONE DAUGHTER.
